2020 Beat the Odds Youth Forum

Exploring civic engagement and empowerment for young Texans

We are pleased to announce the second annual Beat the Odds (BTO) Youth Forum. This event will be a safe space for all people, but especially ages 14–30, to learn more about civic engagement and connect them with effective resources to make a significant and lasting difference in their communities.

Hear from various advocacy groups and changemakers, then get a chance to ask questions, gain insight and take action.

Admission is free, but RSVPs are required by April 1st.

Meet our Keynote Speaker

Dr. Terrell Strayhorn

Founding CEO, Do Good Work Educational Consulting LLC
Interim Vice President & Professor, LeMoyne-Owen College

Terrell Strayhorn will ignite, encourage, and challenge.

Dr. Strayhorn is an internationally recognized student-success scholar, highly acclaimed public speaker, and award-winning writer with more than 200 publications, including 10 books, to his credit. In addition to his role as interim vice president for academic and student affairs at LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee, he also serves as Professor of Urban Education.

Dr. Strayhorn has been on the faculty of many prestigious institutions of higher learning such as The Ohio State University and the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Strayhorn has achieved major honors in academia and beyond as he was named one of the country’s top diversity scholars by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education in 2011, one of Business First’s “Top 40 under 40,” one of the “Top 20 to Know in Education,” and became the youngest full professor in Ohio State’s history in 2014.

He received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia (UVA); Master’s degree in educational policy from the Curry School of Education at UVA, and PhD in higher education from Virginia Tech.

Location & Parking

The forum will be held in the 3rd floor event space inside the Big Brothers Big Sisters building.

There is free parking in the lot diagonally across from the building. The Lot is located on Washington Ave, just east of Mentor Way.
