As part of their commemorations for Constitution Day last month, The National Endowment for the Humanities launched a new “A More Perfect Union” initiative, focusing on American history and civic education. The initiative will fund opportunities for humanities projects that promote a deep understanding of American history and culture.
The Student Civic and Voter Empowerment Act has been signed into law by California Governor Gavin Newson. Authored by Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris (D-Laguna Beach), the act aims to engage youth voters and ensure that California’s elections engage the full potential of their electorate. Designated Civic and Voter Empowerment Coordinators will be hired at every campus to create a committee of faculty and students dedicated to developing campus-wide action plans to increase civic participation.
Tennessee Governor Bill Lee launched the Governor’s Civics Seal and Mini-Grants Program this month to support and recognize schools and districts that prioritize teaching U.S. history and civic values. Up to $170,000 of funds will be awarded to schools and districts that provide programs, resources, and professional learning opportunities that emphasize civic learning.
